Biography
From Madeira to the world
Origins
Madeira, Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on February 5, 1985 in Funchal, Madeira. The youngest of four children, he grew up in poverty in a small home. His father José Dinis worked as a gardener; his mother Maria Dolores cleaned houses. Football became his escape and obsession from childhood.
Youth Career
Sporting CP Academy
Spotted by Sporting Lisbon scouts at 12, Ronaldo moved alone from Madeira to Lisbon — an incredibly bold act for a boy so young. He excelled at the Sporting academy, impressing coaches with his pace, dribbling, and unmatched determination. A famous pre-season friendly against Manchester United would change everything.
Personal Life
Family & Philanthropy
Father to five children including Cristiano Jr., Ronaldo is deeply family-oriented. He has donated millions to causes in Portugal and globally, including funding a burns unit in Madeira named after his father, building schools, and donating to earthquake and humanitarian relief. Forbes consistently ranks him among the world's highest-paid athletes.
Physical Excellence
The Machine
Renowned for elite athleticism: a vertical leap measured at 78cm (higher than most NBA players), sprint speed of 33.6 km/h, and resting heart rate of 44 bpm. His dedication to physical conditioning — sleeping in 90-minute cycles, five separate nap sessions daily — has been widely studied and emulated in sports science.
